The 61-year-old became the coach of Fiji in 2020. After serving as a coach for French clubs Montpellier and Clermont Auvergne.
At an abruptly scheduled news conference in Suva on Thursday. Fiji Rugby chairman Humphrey Tawake announced that Cotter’s written statement had been accepted. And that a replacement coach will be chosen “in due time.”

I’m sorry to be leaving at this time since I think we created a terrific society thanks to some excellent individuals who were diligent and got along with one another.”

Tevita Tuiloa, the union’s temporary chief executive, refrained to predict who might succeed Cotter, saying only that “it may be Fijian or from different corners of the world.” But he said he expected to identify a trainer before the end of February.
“Vern Cotter’s hiring to Fiji Rugby was a wonderful thing. However, the decision (to resign) came straight from him owing to personal circumstances.” Tuiloa said at a press conference in Suva.
“Time is not on our sideways in standings of finding an instructor to upraise the Flying Fijians to the next level in the Rugby World Cup. But we are assured in our players,” the statement added.
The Rugby World Cup, will take place in France and begin on September 8. It has placed Fiji in Pool C alongside Wales, Australia, and Georgia, all of whom recently had head coaching changes.
Fiji’s finest performance came during the 2007 tournament in France. Where they defeated Wales and progressed to the quarterfinals before falling to the eventual champions South Africa.

Cotter succeeded fellow New Zealander John McKee as the Flying Fijians’ head coach. He previously served as the head coach of Scotland (2014–2017), Clermont Auvergne (2006–2014), and Montpellier (2017-2019).
