Toby Flood asks England fans to give Marcus Smith space to improve game ahead of RWC

Toby Flood believes that England fans should give Marcus Smith room to improve his game in the run-up to the Rugby World Cup2023 in France. Despite Owen Farrell’s return to fitness, the former England fly-half stated Marcus Smith would be his first choice ten in an interview with The Rugby Paper Podcast. Toby Flood believes that England fans should give Marcus Smith room to improve his game

As he pondered on Smith’s debut stint in international football, Flood observed, “Smith has been fantastic.” Flood stated on the podcast: On a side note, there’s some absurd stuff being published about how essential he is to us. He is significant. He has, however, played a few games.

People are predicting that if Smith does not perform well, the team will not win the Rugby World Cup. Let’s give this guy a little room to grow into an international player. In the atmosphere he has known since he was 18, he has been remarkable for Quins. He’s arrived at a familiar location.

At the international level, however, he is still learning the ropes. There will be ups and downs, but he will give it his all. Toby Flood, Brendan Gallagher, Nick Cain, and presenter Oliver Little debate England’s starting XV at the Rugby World Cup 2023 in the newest episode of The Rugby Paper Podcast.

Smith should be England’s first-choice fly-half, according to all four members of the panel. Manu Tuilagi should be England’s first choice inside the centre, according to the experts. Toby Flood said: 12 – He’s a phenomenon, whether you’ve played with him or against him. I’d put him in at twelve o’clock.

Tuilagi’s bad luck with injuries, on the other hand, means England must prepare for his absence. If the Sales centre was unavailable for selection, the panel debated who they would choose as a substitute for Manu Tuilagi at the inside centre.

In Tuilagi’s absence, Nick Cain believes Gloucester’s Mark Atkinson should play at 12. The Rugby Paper columnist, on the other hand, believes that England should consider Saracens’ Alex Lozowski and Leicester Tigers’ Guy Porter as possible Tuilagi replacements.

He continued, “The talent that England hasn’t grasped is (Paolo) Odugwa at Wasps.” He is physically comparable to Manu. Cain believes he is more suited to the midfield despite lately playing on the flank for Wasps.

He doesn’t appear to be a good fit for me. At twelve, he has the ability to make an impact beyond 30 yards. Take a peek at this person, at the very least. If I were Italy, I’d call this guy once a week.

Eddie Jones appears to be destined to remain England's head coach until after the Rugby World Cup 2023

England RWC 2023 ‘Eddie may stay and they may want him’

Eddie Jones could keep his job as England’s head coach if he wins the Rugby World Cup in France in 2023, according to Dean Richards, who does not believe that a successor must be English. Rugby Fans can buy RWC 2023 Tickets from our website.

Eddie Jones appears to be destined to remain England’s head coach until after the Rugby World Cup 2023

“We believe we’ve got such a wealth of English coaches in the game,” Bill Sweeney, the Rugby Football Union’s chief executive, has declared. We should be creating English coaches and an English style of play as a great rugby nation. As far as I’m concerned, that should be long-term, therefore having an English set-up would be preferable.”

Richards, who has 48 England caps and unequaled Premiership experience as a director of rugby, has a different perspective and feels that an English victory at the Rugby World Cup will erase the memories of Jones’ two consecutive bad Six Nations finishes.

“Ultimately, the road to the RWC 2023 quarter- and semi-finals (for England) appears quite clear at the moment, and if you are within two matches of winning a Rugby World Cup, everything will be forgotten,” he stated. Eddie might decide to stay, and they might want him to.”

Richards wants the option to be open to all applicants if Sweeney and the panel hearing Jones’ case decide he should step down after the RWC in France. He went on to say, “It has to be the best suitable coach to win us a Rugby World Cup as simple as that.” “It doesn’t have to be English, but they must have a basic grasp of the English culture and mindset in order to get the most out of the English” (players).

It provides a clear path to understanding what it takes to become a global player. There are several applicants, many of them are English speakers, as well as some foreigners. I don’t believe they must have worked on a global scale, but there must be an understanding of their skills and whether they meet the requirements you’ve set.

Andy Farrell, Rob Baxter, Richard Cockerill, and Alex Sanderson are among the candidates

It can be tough to judge a person’s ability simply by observing them work alongside an international head coach at times. Because rugby is unlike any other sport, the advantages you earn from being a director of rugby or a head coach in the Premiership are enormous.

However, because the Premiership and international levels are so different, you must determine whether the talents and flaws you develop in the Premiership will be useful at the international level. It’s about the parameters they set and if they believe there are those who would fit the description who have already worked in international rugby and those who haven’t.

Danny Care offers his opinion on who should be England’s next head coach

Eddie Jones appears to be destined to remain England’s head coach until after the Rugby World Cup 2023, but the Australian has stated that his tenure will expire after the tournament in France. Rugby Fans can buy RWC 2023 Tickets from our website.

Eddie Jones appears to be destined to remain England’s head coach until after the Rugby World Cup 2023

Naturally, there has been much speculation about who might succeed Jones, with Borthwick, Andy Farrell, Rob Baxter, Richard Cockerill, and Alex Sanderson among the candidates. The RFU has stated its preference for an English head coach, with Borthwick, Andy Farrell, Rob Baxter, Richard Cockerill, and Alex Sanderson among the candidates.

Borthwick appears to be the front candidate as a result of his excellent work with Leicester Tigers, despite the fact that he lacks experience, as Care pointed out on the BBC Rugby Union Weekly podcast.

Danny Care is a candidate for the place of England’s next head coach

It’s difficult to say because Steve Borthwick has the most experience out of those people. No, he doesn’t, Care stated emphatically.

I’d say Andy Farrell has been training lengthier than Steve Borthwick, as has Richard Cockerill, Rob Baxter has been coaching for a lot longer, and I’d say Alex Sanderson coached Steve Borthwick at Saracens.

So Steve Borthwick is arguably the least experienced of the English contenders, but I believe he is the only one who has been in the [England] camp and has jammed a lot in. He’s won everything as a player, both nationally and as a club player, and I believe everyone who knows Steve Borthwick understands the level of detail that would go into that England team.

I just think the head coach becomes a lot of courtesy, but the other assistant coaches are just as essential. They must all be capable of challenging the head coach, with the head coach willing to be challenged for the greater good.

IRFU will certainly want to keep him beyond the Rugby World Cup 2023
IRFU will certainly want to keep him beyond the Rugby World Cup 2023

In English rugby, there is no shortage of qualified coaches

Andy Farrell has done an excellent job as Ireland’s coach in recent years, and he also spent four years as England’s defensive coach, so the IRFU will certainly want to keep him beyond the Rugby World Cup 2023.

Borthwick, Baxter, and Sanderson are all currently committed to their clubs, while Cockerill is England’s forward’s coach, albeit for only about six months. Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall, who has managed the North London club to three Heineken Champions Cup championships, might be another choice, however, the County Down man could be persuaded to return to Ireland.

There is still a lot of water under the bridge until the RFU names the next England head coach, but it does not appear likely that it will be someone who has never coached in England.

Spain's participation in the Rugby World Cup 2023 in France is in jeopardy

Spain’s place in Rugby World Cup 2023 in doubt

Spain’s participation in the Rugby World Cup 2023 in France is in jeopardy due to an investigation into allegations of fielding an ineligible player. On March 13, Spain qualified for its second Rugby World Cup, and first since 1999. Rugby Fans can buy RWC 2023 Tickets from our website.

However, World Rugby announced on Monday that it will convene an independent judicial committee to investigate a possible breach of Regulation 8 concerning a player’s eligibility for internationals by Spain during Rugby World Cup qualifying.

“World Rugby has been made aware of a potential breach involving one member of the Spanish national men’s senior team,” the statement added. “After conducting preliminary investigations, the international federation considers that a formal independent assessment is necessary.” Throughout the early inquiries, the Spanish Rugby Union has been completely accommodating.”

Gavin van der Berg, a South African-born front-rower, is said to be the subject of the investigation. He made his debut in the Rugby Europe Championship, which also served as Rugby World Cup qualifying, on Dec. 18, when Spain defeated the Netherlands 52-7 in Amsterdam. Van der Berg came on in the second half and scored a try.

Van der Berg arrived in Spain in 2018 and had to stay for three years in order to qualify for residence before making his debut on Dec. 18. But, according to reports, he returned to South Africa for four months in 2019 and visited again in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic.

Spain could lose at least the 10 competition points it won against the Netherlands if it is found guilty of violating Regulation 8. It would fall from second to fourth place in European qualifying, and it would be eliminated from the Rugby World Cup. Romania, on the other hand, might finish second and qualify for the world repechage tournament in November, while Portugal could finish third and qualify for the world repechage tournament in November.

Spain has been engaged in controversy for the second consecutive Rugby World Cup qualifying match. Spain, Romania, and Belgium were fined in 2018 for fielding ineligible players, yet Russia qualified for the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

At the Rugby World Cup 2023, all four of those teams will be in the same half of the draw

Early draw hurts Rugby World Cup 2023

The draw for the Rugby World Cup 2023 took place on December 14, 2020, in Paris, exactly 1,000 days before the tournament’s first match on September 8, 2023, between hosts France and the All Blacks. Rugby Fans can buy RWC 2023 Tickets from our website.

the Springboks, All Blacks, England, and Wales in band one, Ireland, Australia, France
the Springboks, All Blacks, England, and Wales in band one, Ireland, Australia, France

The 12 automatic qualifiers were seeded based on their World Rugby Rankings as of January 1, 2020, with the Springboks, All Blacks, England, and Wales in band one, Ireland, Australia, France, and Japan in band two, and Scotland, Argentina, Fiji, and Italy in band three.

After the draw and the 2022 Six Nations, the foolishness of having the draw almost three years before the tournament – based on rankings from 11 months earlier – was painfully highlighted.

The Springboks, All Blacks, England, and Wales were the top-four ranked teams on January 1, 2020. (The RWC 2019 semi-finalists). Wales had dropped from fourth to ninth place by 14 December 2020, while France had risen from seventh to fourth place.

The Springboks, newly crowned Six Nations winners France, the All Blacks, and Ireland were the top-four ranked teams on March 21, 2022. At the Rugby World Cup 2023, all four of those teams will be in the same half of the draw, meaning two of them will not advance past the quarterfinals, while lower-ranked teams in the other half of the draw, such as ninth-placed Wales, may.

World Rugby has never explained why the draw must take place in the first year of a Rugby World Cup cycle, although it is likely to benefit the organizers by allowing tickets to go on sale earlier. This, however, comes at the expense of the tournament’s credibility.

The Springboks, All Blacks, England, and Wales were the top-four ranked teams on January 1, 2020
The Springboks, All Blacks, England, and Wales were the top-four ranked teams on January 1, 2020

The goal of employing a seeding system for a tournament is to ensure that the top four teams advance to the semi-finals and the top two teams compete in the final. Obviously, results do not always match seedings, but at the very least, you avoid a situation in which the best two teams meet in the quarter-finals, while a plainly weaker team from the other side of the draw has an easy path to the final.

When it comes to World Cup draws, World Rugby can learn from FIFA

The 2022 Fifa World Cup draw will take place in Doha on 1 April 2022, 235 days before the opening match on November 21. Yet, that is enough time for the organizers of the world’s largest sporting event to complete their tasks, as well as for spectators to purchase tickets and make travel arrangements to Qatar.

After the November Tests, World Rugby could have held the draw for the RWC 2023 in December of last year. Yes, some nations’ form may have fluctuated between then and the start of the World Cup nine months later, but it was significantly less than it had been during the previous three years.

Hopefully, World Rugby will learn how badly it timed the Rugby World Cup 2023 draw and avoid repetition for the Rugby World Cup 2027 in Australia.

RFU aims to name an English successor to Jones before Rugby World Cup 2023

Bill Sweeney, the RFU’s president, stated that he would want to choose an English man to succeed Eddie Jones as head coach. Sweeney has lent his support to Jones, who is under fire after a string of poor Six Nations performances. Jones has a contract with the RFU that runs through the end of the Rugby World Cup in 2023.

Sweeney’s desire to pick local coaches to succeed Jones effectively eliminates former Wales coach Warren Gatland and former South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus. Rugby Fans can buy RWC 2023 Tickets from our website.

Sweeney told British reporters on Saturday, “We believe we have such a plethora of English coaches in the game.” “We should be creating English coaches and an English style of play as a great rugby nation.” As far as I’m concerned, that should be long-term, so I’d prefer an English setup.”

Jones, who took over as England’s head coach in 2016 and was the first foreigner to do so, has led the team to three Six Nations titles and a Rugby World Cup runner-up performance in Japan in 2019.

The RFU, according to Sweeney, has an “advanced succession plan” in place. “We have a war room with every English coach you can think of – both locally and globally,” Sweeney added.

The RFU’s director of performance rugby, Conor O’Shea, stated that the successor will be named before the summer of 2023. “That’s a topic for discussion, whether it’s incorporating them into the curriculum or having a helicopter view. We’d like to believe we’ll be appointing them in the years leading up to 2023 “O’Shea went on to say.

Steve Borthwick, Rob Baxter, and Richard Cockerill have also been connected to the England head coach position in the British media. (Manasi Pathak in Bengaluru contributed reporting; Christopher Cushing edited the piece).

Georgia and Spain, like Europe 1 and 2, became the 15th and 16th teams

Georgia and Spain, like Europe 1 and 2, became the 15th and 16th teams to book their tickets to France this month, but there are still four spots left for the great quadrennial event. We give you the lowdown on who has been invited to France and who could be interested in joining them…

Which teams have already qualified for the tournament?

Due to their success at the previous Rugby World Cup in Japan three years ago, twelve countries qualified directly for France.

The top three teams from each of the four groups qualified for the Rugby World Cup 2019 in France. South Africa, England, and the sides they defeated in the semi-finals, Wales and New Zealand, are among them.

Losers of the quarter-finals Australia, Ireland, Japan, and the hosts are among the participants. France, as well as Scotland, Italy, Argentina, and Fiji, who all finished third in their respective groups, will compete in RWC 2023. Last July, Samoa qualified for the RWC 2023 after defeating Tonga in two matches to earn the Oceania 1 position.

Uruguay defeated the United States in a home-and-away series three months later to become the 14th team to earn a ticket to France as Americas 1. Then it was the turn of Georgia and Spain to secure their attendance in France, after coming first and second in the joint qualification for the Rugby Europe Championships in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

Georgia has competed in every World Cup since its debut in 2003, whereas Spain will be making their first participation in the competition since 1999.

What method will be used to determine the remaining qualifiers?

Qualifying tournaments will be placed throughout 2022 to determine the final four nations that will compete in the RWC 2023. Tonga has beaten the Cook Islands since losing the Oceania 1 play-off to Samoa and will face the winner of the Rugby Asia Championship in July to determine who will represent Asia/Pacific 1 at the Rugby World Cup 2023.

Chile, who broke Canada’s record of participating in every Rugby World Cup, will meet the United States in the two-leg Americas 2 playoff in July, hoping to qualify for their ninth RWC. The Rugby Africa Cup 2022 will be held in the south of France from July 1 to 10, with the winner of the eight-team knockout competition qualifying for the Rugby World Cup 2023 as Africa 1.

RWC 2019 Final Qualifying Tournament

Matches will be held at Aix-en-Stade Provence’s Maurice-David and Marseille’s Stade Pierre-Delort, which hosted the RWC 2019 Final Qualifying Tournament. Senegal, Uganda, and Zimbabwe qualified for the quarter-finals as group winners, with Namibia aiming for a seventh successive Rugby World Cup appearance.

Burkina Faso, Algeria, Kenya, and the Ivory Coast, who finished second in their group, have joined them in the last eight. On July 1-2, Burkina Faso, the country with the lowest Capgemini-powered World Rugby men’s ranking (number 91), will face Namibia, while Senegal will face Algeria, Uganda will face Kenya, and Zimbabwe will face Côte d’Ivoire.

In the semi-finals, the victor of the quarter-final between Namibia and Burkina Faso will face either Zimbabwe or Côte d’Ivoire, who have each played in three Rugby World Cups. For a place in the final, Senegal or Algeria will play the winner of the quarter-final between Uganda and East African rivals Kenya.

On the 10th of July, there will be a bronze final, as well as play-offs for fifth and seventh place, before the final, which will determine Africa’s representative at the RWC 2023.

Is there another way to RWC 2023?

Yes, teams that narrowly miss out on qualifying for the RWC 2023 through regional competitions will still have a chance to play in France. The four nations who will compete in the RWC 2023 Final Qualifying Tournament are Romania, which finished third in the combined 2021 and 2022 Rugby Europe Championship table, as well as the losing finalist from the 2022 Rugby Africa Cup and the teams that were defeated in the Asian Cup. /Play-offs for the Pacific and Americas 2.

The team that finishes first in the Tournament standings will earn the last spot at RWC 2023, which will be played in a round-robin style.

What is the date of the Final Qualifying Tournament?

The Final Qualifying Tournament will be the final qualifying stage for the RWC 2023, as its name suggests.

Rugby World Cup: All Blacks legend explains Johnny Sexton’s concern

John Kirwan, the All Blacks Rugby World Cup winner, has stated why he is concerned about Ireland’s chances in the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Despite the fact that Sexton is towards the end of his career, he has continued to impress with Ireland, which Kirwan is concerned about. “My main concern is Johnny Sexton,” says John Kirwan.

He is concerned that the Leinster star would not be able to maintain his top level of performance by the time the Rugby World Cup begins, as he stated on New Zealand television. Kirwan began, “My main concern is Sexton.” “I believe he is one of the best stand-offs in the world.” He’s a master planner. From a tactical standpoint, his out-of-hand kicking is excellent.

Anyone who is making an RWC selection is taking a significant risk. For Rugby World Cups, players tend to stay on. It’ll be interesting to see if he can stay healthy and fit for a year because a year is a long time.

“Farrell’s significance should not be underestimated.” He worked as Joe’s assistant (Schmidt). For the Rugby World Cup 2023, I’m going to France, Ireland, England, with a big question mark, and then the other two on their day, he says. France and Ireland are either there or close.”

Rugby World Cup dreams

While the All Blacks are optimistic about Ireland’s chances, they do so with a proviso. Ireland has never advanced to the semi-finals of an RWC, and they will be hoping to avoid the same fate as Japan in 2019. However, Ireland will meet the All Blacks in a three-game test series this summer.

Israel Folau, a former Wallaby, could return to international rugby in for the Rugby World Cup 2023

Israel Folau has 73 caps for Australia, having made his debut in the Lions test series in 2013. Over the course of six years, Folau won 73 caps, the latest of which came in 2019.

Folau began his rugby league career with the Melbourne Storm of the National Rugby League. After signing with the Brisbane Broncos in 2009, he made a name for himself. Folau had a brief career in Australian Rules with Greater Western Sydney before switching to rugby union with Australia and the New South Wales Waratahs.

Since joining the Waratahs, Folau has established himself as one of the top fullbacks in the world. His contract with the Australian Rugby Union was terminated in 2019 due to a code of conduct violation. Folau returned to rugby union this year after a run-in rugby league with the Catalan Dragon in the Super League. He played in Japan League One.

“It would be a big honor if I got the opportunity,” Folau remarked in a press conference. We’ll have to wait and see if the opportunity arises, but I’d love to wear the Tongan jersey and represent Tonga.”

World Rugby made a significant change to its international eligibility requirements in November of last year. A player can now switch teams if he or she has not been selected for their national team in at least three years and has a parent or grandparent who was born in the country they wish to represent. Israel Folau is eligible to play for Tonga since he meets the requirements.

Folau said he has “no regrets about anything, but it’s led me here to Japan, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.” Folau might play for Tonga at the Rugby World Cup 2023 in France next September if he is selected and the country qualifies. If Tonga qualifies, they will most likely be placed in Pool B with Ireland, South Africa, Scotland, and Spain.
