But Eddie Jones’ selection process around him – at the other three conventional ball-winning places of numbers 5, 6, and 8 – is made much simpler by those five lineouts earned in Dublin, added to the three he won in the semifinal match against Exeter.

His strategy’s underpinnings are concealed from view. In Top 14 play this season, one in five of Skelton’s carries results in a tackle bust, the same as Greg Alldritt, and the proportion for effective passes is double: one out of every seven takes compared to Alldritt’s one in 15. This power ball-carrying has been a major problem for Leinster over the past seasons.

Even while the big guy abundantly displayed that talent in his appearance against Ireland in November, power ball carrying is not always a simple issue of dominating collisions and breaking tackles. Skelton is only taken down in the example below by the fifth Ireland tackle attempt:

Heavy ball carrying also involves trying to change the ruck’s computational abilities. The carry will be prepared for the following stage if it can put a lot of defenders on the field as the attack has to allocate to the cleanout.

Skelton doesn’t gain any yards on the carry, although he does take two Leinster defenders out of the game for the following play by knocking them to the ground. Greg Alldritt had the opportunity to line up one of Leinster’s smaller backs (No. 10 Ross Byrne) independently further out due to the two-vs-two equation.

Later in the half, on the Leinster 22, the same idea came up again:

At the opening ruck, Skelton dispatches three home defenders, and 140-kilogram prop Uini Atonio is already grinning broadly at the thought of colliding with Jamison Gibson-Park, the scrumhalf for Leinster, who is a small man. Both times, Leinster openside Josh van der Flier (in the red cap) must perform last-minute clean-up duties at the tackle, which eliminates him from consideration as well.

La Rochelle had an advantage from the association of their two enormous tight forwards on the carry-on other occasions as well. Skelton passes to Atonio in contact before rising from the ground to pile-drive Jason Jenkins, a South African, who is his opponent at the next cleanup. Wallabies need Skelton’s strength

However, if there is one area more than any other where Will Skelton’s strength and bulk matter, it is in the close-quarter effort at ruck and maul, a place where the Wallabies in 2022 are somewhat weak:

The former Waratah is positioned to Paul Boudehent’s right and takes the drive through the open-side corner after first lifting his back. Every time you see the image in the screenshot, it symbolises a win for the attacking team, with the blocker standing precisely in front of the receiver and Jenkins (6’7, 125 pounds) standing away from the push of forward movement.

The French teams bought a lot of imports. 15 of the starting players for La Rochelle and Toulon have or will in the future represent a nation abroad. That is the privately owned model: longer campaigns and more games to increase gate receipts; more foreign arrivals to bolster playing squads; greater pay scales to draw in the best players.

Only two starters for Leinster and Glasgow were either not homegrown or were not eligible for Ireland or Scotland under the existing residency regulations. At the club level, the Top 14 is winning the debate thanks to Toulon’s convincing victory and La Rochelle’s second consecutive come-from-behind victory.

The union-governed approach works much better because of the upward progression to the next level. Leinster to Ireland, the Crusaders to New Zealand in Australia, and even Toulouse to Les Bleus all have more direct adaptations than La Rochelle or the Crusaders. While Ireland claimed the Grand Slam and easily defeated France en route, France won the European Cup finals.

Skelton deserves to be part of the RWC team

Will Skelton is a perfect illustration of how France is producing as much ability for its foreign adversaries as it is for itself. With Saracens and La Rochelle, Skelton has now won the European Cup three times. He performed all of his best rugby outside of Australia.

He deserves to be part of the Wallabies at the Rugby World Cup 2023 without a shadow of a doubt.
