According to Olympics.com, each National Olympic Committee (NOC) will be given 26 quotas for men and women. Each NOC will be allowed to send a maximum of two athletes to compete in the individual competition at the Paris 2024. Olympic Swimming: Qualification pathway
The Olympic Committee recently announced that the qualification process for Paris 2024 will be based on a four-point system with priority in the following order:
- Athletes who have reached the Olympic Qualifying Time (OQT).
- Athletes who are members of an NOC relay team (relay athletes only).
- Universal seats
- Athletes who have been invited and have reached the Olympic Consideration Time (OCT)
In certain events at the Summer Games, athletes will be required to reach Olympic Qualifying Time or Olympic Consideration Time. There are different times for individual competitions, and athletes must meet these times during the qualifying period from March 1, 2023 to June 23, 2024.
Each NOC is allowed to enter two athletes for the competition, provided that the athlete meets the OQT. After the end of the qualifying period, if the 852 swimming spots have not been filled in accordance with the three priority qualifying methods, athletes who have reached the OST will compete in various competitions until the number is reached.
The relay at the Olympic Paris will feature 16 teams in each category. The final results of the 20th World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan in July 2023 will determine the top three teams that will advance to the respective competitions in Paris.
The remaining 13 places will be determined in the preliminary heats of each relay at the 21st FINA World Championships 2024 in Doha, Qatar. This will exclude teams that have already qualified in Japan.
In the event of a tie in Japan, only 12 places will be up for grabs in Qatar. However, if two teams are tied for third place in Qatar, they will compete in a swim to determine who will qualify for the Olympic 2024. Olympic Paris Nomination Policies for Swimming and Diving Announced
Swim Ireland is pleased to announce the nomination policy for the Paris 2024 Summer Games in swimming and diving, which has been approved by the Irish Olympic Federation.

However, athletes can only attend the Summer Games through the OCT if they are invited to do so by World Aquatics and the International Olympic Committee. The number of invitations worldwide is expected to be very low as such invitations are only offered after all other athletes have been offered their places at the Games. In addition to this, World Aquatics received fewer places for athletes at the Olympic 2024 than in previous times.
In diving, individual and synchronized qualification opportunities are available at the 2023 EOC European Games in Rzeszow, and in swimming at the World Championships in Fukuoka and Doha. There are no more than 136 places available worldwide in diving, with the European Games providing the first opportunity to qualify; only gold medallists in Rzeszow at every Olympic event will secure a spot for their country on this occasion.
At the World Championships in Fukuoka, the top 12 in the individual and top 3 in the synchronized classification in each Olympic discipline will receive places, with the last qualifying opportunity being given at the Doha World Championships in 2024, after which the remaining places will be allocated based on slots, available for sports at a given time.
National Performance Director John Rudd commented: We are in a very good position to be able to confirm our Olympic 2024 nomination route at a relatively early stage and provide athletes with three different options to achieve this.
The use of the World Championships as part of our qualifying routes was important as we felt we should endorse such performances at these events as that is ultimately what we are looking for at the Games – proof that an athlete can perform on the international stage for the time that really matters.
In diving, the qualifying events are run by World Aquatics, but in swimming we have more flexibility. So, we also felt that qualifying competitions on home soil were important for our athletes as well. So, the opportunities are a good mix of that without having to try to qualify too often, which often jeopardizes performance at the Summer Games as a result.
Rudd went on to say: In swimming, the OCT is now represented at such a high level that we feel the same as many other top nations to see them now; if invitations come to us through the OCT performance (given that there will be so few of them around the world as a whole), such an athlete will be at the level to be very competitive at the Summer Games.
On this basis, if any such invitations come from performances in our three nomination competitions, we will be inclined to accept them.
