Olympic Equestrian – After heartbreak, S’pore equestrienne Caroline Chew targets Paris 2024

Tribiani likes to snack on apples and carrots, he likes to scratch his ears and back. But the 19-year-old Norwegian Warmblood Gelding, also known as Joey, is like a cranky child when things don’t go his way. Horse’s best friend Caroline Chew knows all these quirks like the back of her hand.

The 30-year-old national rider said: He is a very changeable character. Day by day, he becomes moody or may feel completely different. But that’s just his character, and we’ve learned to work with him over the last eight years. It was their chemistry that led to the historic qualification for the 2020 Tokyo Games, making the pair the first Singaporean duo to compete in Olympic equestrian at the France Olympics.

But a bizarre accident led to an early elimination – Tribiani was found to be bleeding from the mouth, resulting in them being eliminated from the individual dressage qualifying competition. The traumatic experience was not what Chew, a Washington-based lawyer at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, expected from her first Olympic.

“She said it was hard to deal with. Obviously nobody wants that to happen during the four yearly Olympics and you don’t even know if you’ll be good enough to qualify again in the next cycle.”

Tears were shed, but failure briefly kept her from the saddle. She continued to compete in major events such as the World Dressage Championships in Denmark last August, where she placed 50th with a score of 69.146.

Chew, who trains five to six times a week, said: The reason I combine riding with a challenging career and dedicate so much time and energy to it is because I just love working with horses. And I’m very, very close to Joey, so I got back in the saddle and continued to improve and enjoy our dynamics, which allowed me to walk away from the incident.

She is hoping for a second chance at the Olympic, starting her Olympic Paris 2024 qualifying campaign from a circuit in the United States in January. The pair also qualified for the FEI World Cup Final April 4-8, 2023 in Omaha, USA. This is the first time Chew will be participating in the annual event, which features Tokyo Olympic champion Jessica von Bredow-Werndl of Germany.

Heading to the Paris Summer Games, Chew doesn’t miss a choice when it comes to her running mate. She bought her second horse, a 14-year-old Oldenburg stallion named Blue Horse Zachmo, in 2022. At 19, Tribiani showed no signs of slowing down, setting a new personal best of 75,930 at the World Dressage Festival in Florida in February. But dressage horses usually peak between 11 and 14 years of age, and she’s not sure if Tribiani will continue to compete at that level in the future.

After spending a happy eight-year period with Tribiani, Chew said that “Over the last couple of years we have gradually improved our personal records – he continues to amaze me. She added: Joey is still my main horse – we’ve been through a lot together. We look forward to milestones in the future.

Olympic Equestrian  – NZL Dressage Combinations Rocket Up the Olympic Paris Group G Rankings

Group G riders are competing for two individual places at the Olympic Paris 2024 Games, however each country can only earn one place. Performances at CDI level 3* and above count for the best score in each of the four events, which count on a % basis. Grand Prix, Special and Freestyle are eligible, although Freestyle points awarded are slightly lower.

Group G riders were busy racing at the Florida circuit, with Singapore and Thailand already scoring four points each, followed by Japan and two Korean riders with three each. The Kiwis are closing in on Melissa Galloway, Wendy Williamson and Gaylen Lennard in sixth, seventh and eighth with just two starts each.

Melissa scored a perfect 77.035% for Outstanding Freestyle with Windermere JObei W at the Bates National Championships. Both Wendy and Melissa raised the New Zealand bar by scoring over 70% across all classes at their two New Zealand CDI events in 2023, while the other Group G drivers have yet to reach the magical 70% in either Grand Prix or in Special.

The next opportunity for the best NZL duo will be the Sydney CDI April 26-28, where they will make up two of the sixteen entries in the CDI3* Grand Prix.

France Olympic  – FEI maintains ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes despite IOC recommendations

The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) has decided to keep the ban on the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in international equestrian competitions.

The International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) has decided to maintain the ban on the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in international equestrian competitions, despite the fact that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recently proposed that some athletes from these countries compete as neutrals.

The FEI’s decision was made because the group lacks the tools needed to properly determine and assess neutrality. Ingmar De Vos, President of the FEI and spokesperson for the IOC, said it was decided to keep the ban on for now.

Last week, the IOC Executive Board proposed allowing some Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete again in international competitions if they do not openly support the invasion of Ukraine or have military ties. The position of the IOC reversed its previous proposal for a total suspension of these athletes following the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. According to the International Olympic Committee, it is up to the individual sports federations to decide whether to comply with their proposals or not.

On March 2, 2022, the FEI ban came into effect, banning Athletes, Horses and Officials from Russia and Belarus from participating in equestrian events. The IOC recommendations for the return of neutral athletes from Russia and Belarus to international competitions were discussed during an emergency teleconference of the FEI Council. The Board concluded that neutrality cannot currently be adequately defined and assessed, and that the FEI lacks the tools necessary to fairly and impartially assess the conditions of participation for specific neutral athletes and support personnel.

The FEI Board decided to maintain the ban and announced that all Athletes, Horses and Officials from Russia and Belarus will no longer be allowed to compete in FEI Competitions. The FEI Schedule for 2023 cannot be updated by any FEI events held in Russia or Belarus. The Board has also postponed or changed the venues for official courses and other FEI events planned in Russia and Belarus in 2023. All FEI Solidarity programs in these countries remain suspended.

The FEI Board has offered its continued support to the Ukrainian equestrian community through the FEI Solidarity Fund and reiterated its continued support to the people of Ukraine. Russians and Belarusians are now allowed to compete in several sports, including wrestling, table tennis, taekwondo, fencing and table tennis. However, they have created groups that rate neutrality. The Ukrainian government has said that its athletes will not take part in any competitions in which Russians take part.
