Israel Folau has 73 caps for Australia, having made his debut in the Lions test series in 2013. Over the course of six years, Folau won 73 caps, the latest of which came in 2019.

Folau began his rugby league career with the Melbourne Storm of the National Rugby League. After signing with the Brisbane Broncos in 2009, he made a name for himself. Folau had a brief career in Australian Rules with Greater Western Sydney before switching to rugby union with Australia and the New South Wales Waratahs.

Since joining the Waratahs, Folau has established himself as one of the top fullbacks in the world. His contract with the Australian Rugby Union was terminated in 2019 due to a code of conduct violation. Folau returned to rugby union this year after a run-in rugby league with the Catalan Dragon in the Super League. He played in Japan League One.

“It would be a big honor if I got the opportunity,” Folau remarked in a press conference. We’ll have to wait and see if the opportunity arises, but I’d love to wear the Tongan jersey and represent Tonga.”

World Rugby made a significant change to its international eligibility requirements in November of last year. A player can now switch teams if he or she has not been selected for their national team in at least three years and has a parent or grandparent who was born in the country they wish to represent. Israel Folau is eligible to play for Tonga since he meets the requirements.

Folau said he has “no regrets about anything, but it’s led me here to Japan, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.” Folau might play for Tonga at the Rugby World Cup 2023 in France next September if he is selected and the country qualifies. If Tonga qualifies, they will most likely be placed in Pool B with Ireland, South Africa, Scotland, and Spain.
