Alex Hales determined to get off to a good start

It represents something of a change of emotion by England T20 World cup Captain Jos Buttler, who likes to have as many bowling choices at his disposal as possible and was thought to be leaning toward the all-around talents of Sam Curran at seven. So now the skipper and coach Matthew Mott look certain to choose both to take on Afghanistan’s array of spinners, led by the outstanding Rashid Khan, at a Perth Stadium not renowned for helping the slower bowlers.

If any batsman is under threat it is believed to be Alex Hales, who seemed to cement his place at the top of the order when making 84 in the first of three internationals against Australia at the start of this tour but has done slightly since. Hales has done enough to make the team now, not least because of his experience and excellent record in Australia, but if England does decide to go with an extra bowler in subsequent competitions he could be vulnerable. The desperately unlucky absence of Reece Topley, who fears he will need surgery on the ankle he damaged while stepping on a boundary marker in Brisbane on Monday, may open the door for the astonished choice of David Willey. New Zealand has played its part in every single ICC Men’s T20 World Cup since the inaugural competition in South Africa back in 2007 – where they lost to Pakistan in the semi-finals.  In their next four competitions – 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2014, the Black Caps failed to make it outside the Super 8s or Super 10s and into the semi-finals.

Ranked 5th in the ICC MRF Tyres Men’s T20I Player Rankings, Devon Conway is the man to get New Zealand going as an opening batsman.  Averaging an astonishing 52.27 from his 25 innings, with an enticing high score of 99 not out, he is the man to set the tone for the Black Caps alongside Martin Guptill. 

Best Bowlers 

New Zealand’s batting is a strength, but they are not without a top-excellence bowling line-up either.  Their long-standing company consists of Trent Boult and Tim Southee, who, like Williamson have grasped the art of all three formats in New Zealand’s most successful run. 

Both Southee and Boult have unresolved records at the T20 level and are surely one of the most imposing opening bowling combinations in the T20 World Cup this year. Southee’s 122 T20 international wickets have come at an average of 24.62 and Boult’s average is even more impressive, taking 66 wickets at 22.71. The pair is finished by spinner Mitchell Santner, ranked 12th in the world, with 80 wickets and 22.4.

Buttler also takes the reins in a world event for the first time and it will be captivating to see how England copes without the calm authority of retired former skipper Eoin Morgan. Whereas Morgan often had the benefit of a settled side and a priority placed on the rank of the white-ball team, Buttler will be in no doubt that Test cricket is currently England’s prime focus.

It means England’s first-choice T20 side has only been collected at the very last minute, partly because multi-format players were rested for limited-overs matches during the summer, but also because an action room full of fast bowlers has just begun to unfilled.

And then there is the issue of Stokes, who has repaid the England T20 side for the first time since the beginning of 2021. In his 18 months away for reasons of suitability, mental health, and being rested, the questions over how best to utilize the Test captain in the shortest form have grown louder. If England wants all of Stokes, Livingstone, and Moeen Ali on the same side, they would either have to leave out a batsman in Harry Brook or go with only four frontline bowlers. The latter would perhaps be the favored option, given the trio of all-rounders are more than good sufficient to at least bowl the overs of a fifth bowler, and perhaps more.

Still, it is worth England keeping in mind that, in general, batters win competitions,

 Whereas bowlers win tournaments. They may need to switch to a five-strong frontline spell. At least Buttler, Mott, and the rest will be aware of these undecided problems. The danger of the unknown unknowns, thrown up more frequently in T20 World Cups than any other competition, could be the biggest threat to England becoming simultaneous winners in the two limited-overs formats.

Last year, in the United Arab Emirates, England was probably the sturdiest team in the competition, only to be derailed by wounds and a crucial toss in the semi-final against New Zealand. Six years ago they had one hand on the trophy until Brathwaite’s four final-over sixes off the bowling of the devastated Stokes. The T20 World Cup has a history of creating a winner from nowhere. Unlike its marathon 50-over brother, the 20-over competition is a sprint where even your start doesn’t matter so long as you finish well.

“It’s tough to leave home at any time. I have refreshed and only played a month and a half of cricket and it wasn’t in bubbles in the UK.

“I’d be a lot fresher than some of those guys that have been in bubble life since June or July, so I can see where they are coming from. It’s such a huge strain on your mental and physical health to be in those bubbles.

” I am fresh and looking forward to the next couple of months.”

The imposing figure of Hales ended up as the top scorer, helping Thunder finish fifth.

Timely reminder

With a blazing 482 runs at a strike rate of 178 for Nottinghamshire during the 2021 T20 Blast, Hales served as a timely reminder of his skills to selectors.

Despite this, England selectors ignored Hales once more before the ODI and T20 Pakistan series due to a coronavirus outbreak in the bio-bubble.

Michael Vaughan took to Twitter to vent his frustration at Hales’ latest snub.

“So No Alex Hales that must be the end of his international career then find it very sad that someone who made a huge mistake but was punished can’t be given another go,” Vaughan wrote on Twitter.

Covid-19 & bubble fatigue

Hales spent the winter in Australia, where he signed a deal with Covid-19, playing for Thunder in the BBL and Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League.
